A New World Record
A New World Record is an LP by Electric Light Orchestra. It was released in 1976 (see 1976 in music). The album is notable for the hit singles "Telephone Line", "Livin' Thing" and "Do Ya", as well as a general lack of softer ballad-like songs ("Telephone Line" and "Mission" are the only ones). The focus is more on shorter pop songs, a trend which would continue through the rest of ELO's career. Many would consider A New World Record to be another creative high-water mark for the band (the others being Eldorado and A New World Record's followup, Out of the Blue). Aside from "Above the Clouds" (which to many fans is still an excellent track), there isn't a single bit of what could be described as filler here. Jeff Lynne's songwriting skills were peaking, and the band sounds tight and focused, with a wonderfully organic sound that would never appear again as synthesizers overwhelmed the mix from here on out. In addition to the above-mentioned hits, AOR stations gave "Rockaria!", "So Fine" and the dark, dynamic "Tightrope" significant airplay as well. One could have easily heard over two-thirds of this album on the radio over time, which says a great deal about its strength in quality and appeal to a wide audience.
