Brown Album

The Brown Album is an album by alternative rock band Primus. The ''Brown Album'' is considered by many Primus fans and even casual listeners to be their weakest album to date, despite more timeless songwriting and a darker, yet less wacky sense of humor. Many avid Primus followers attribute their strong disliking of this album to the departure of drummer Tim Alexander, and the new introduction of Brian "Brain" Mantia. Mantia is still a skilled drummer, with an amazing sense of rhythm and speedy movements, which is key to Primus's frantic and complicated tunes. Another reason for the dissapointment in longtime Primus fans is the dramatic change in style and formula from earlier Primus albums. A lot of the songs deal with real people and historical accounts. The production is also cruder and done in analog, to fit with the theme, which is the 1800's. The general feel of the album is dark and sparse and there is a reoccurring theme of the general dirtiness and dishonesty dealt with in American life. The song "Hats Off" is a retrospect of Les Claypool's life.
