Gordon Downie


Gordon Downie is a Canadian rock musician from Kingston, Ontario. He is the lead singer and lyricist of the very successful Canadian rock band The Tragically Hip. He has also released two solo albums, ''Coke Machine Glow'' in 2001 and ''Battle of the Nudes'' in 2003.Gord is also the godson of former Boston Bruins GM / coach Harry Sinden.Downie graduated from Kingston Collegiate and Vocational Institute (Kingston, ON) in 1982. His bandmates from The Tragically Hip also attended the school. He attended Ernestown Secondary School (Odessa, ON) in Grade 9 and part of Grade 10.Studied at Queen's University, Kingston, Ont.Was a goalie in minor hockey and played for a bantam team which won an Ontario championship in 1979. His interest in hockey can be seen in numerous Tragically Hip songs, two of note are Fifty-Mission Cap, off their album Fully Completely, and Fireworks, from Phantom Power.Downie's use of stories and myths about life in Canada, along with his wild antics and rantings on stage have helped enshrine The Tragically Hip as a home-grown and much-loved Canadian band. Their popularity outside of Canada, and specifically in the United States, has never matched their draw in the Great White North.Downie currently resides in Toronto.
